Salt – Just a little bit of salt for flavor.Cream of Tartar – Cream of Tartar, when combined with a liquid like buttermilk, helps to activate the baking powder. Shortening – Shortening aids butter in the creation of flaky layers, but it helps the biscuits stay tender. The shortening can be room temperature because it has a higher melting point than butter. Melted Butter (Optional) – If desired, then you can brush melted butter on the tops of the biscuits right after they come out of the oven.
