In essence, this casserole is deconstructed stuffed peppers. It has all the same elements, from onions and bell peppers to a cheesy topping, only done in a big skillet. Consider it the more casual cousin to stuffed peppers, arguably easier to make, a bit homier, and tastier. The dish is built on layers of flavor. Mushrooms and turkey (the recipe calls for ground turkey and spicy turkey sausages) give it a satisfying meatiness....

But if you take the exact same mixture and make it into something bite-sized, it’s instantly more accessible for a kiddo. Like these BBQ Meatloaf Bites, for example! These small meatloaf bites also have the added benefit of being easy to freeze and reheat. And they are the perfect size for a meatball sub. Classic Meatloaf, But Bite-Sized! The base of this recipe is a very standard meatloaf and one that I make often....
“Hot” or not, kale is okay by me; we love our greens here. Kale and cabbage together are a classic combination, most notably found in Irish colcannon mashed potatoes. Cabbage and kale are related—both are brassicas, and both are sturdy plants that store well and can live through winters. It’s only natural to find them enjoying each other’s company in a shredded slaw salad like this one. Pulling this slaw together is a tangy buttermilk dressing, a sort of ranch dressing, with notes of caraway....
A few days ago Garrett brought a jar of these candied kumquats over and we’ve been nibbling on them ever since. Ridiculously easy to make, candied kumquats are half condiment, half candy. You can use them on salads, pork, chicken, cheesecakes, or even with chocolate ice cream. Or you can do what I do, which is to sneak a couple out of the fridge and just eat them straight. Sticky gooey goodness!...

During colder months, soups played a prominent role in my cooking saga. I remember when my roommates and I spent the morning preparing pho, and the day I learned to make chicken tortilla soup. One soup recipe that stuck with me through the years is this creamy coconut and carrot soup. The sweet, earthy flavor of carrots paired with nutty coconut milk offered a myriad of possibilities for adaptations. I tried a coconut carrot soup with lime, crushed peanuts, and chili sauce, and a version with paprika and brown sugar....
Whenever I serve this cake, someone compares it to a favorite bakery or boxed cake from their childhood. That’s not what I’d set out to do when I first made the cake, but it’s been my goal ever since because I, too, have good memories of a store-bought cake like this one. The cake is tight-grained but tender. It’s made with ricotta, which is part of why it’s tender and part of why its flavor is so distinctive....
Oreo lovers, this one is for you! Even if you don’t love Oreos you will LOVE this double chocolate Oreo bundt cake. The inside of this cake is perfectly moist and chocolatey. The chunks of Oreos soften while baking so you get these little chocolate bits bursting with creamy “stuff”. This cake batter is perfect for a bundt cake pan! It is easy to make and fills into the groves of the bundt pan easily....
What’s hummus made of? Cooked chickpeas (garbanzo beans), tahini, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and salt. Purée everything, top with some paprika and a swirl of olive oil and voilà, you’re done. Use Quality Ingredients for Hummus With this few ingredients, their quality is important. You can cook your chickpeas from scratch or use canned, which is what we are doing here for our quick and easy version. Note that not all canned chickpeas are equal....

Hot Dogs With a Kimchi Twist These Korean-style hot dogs are your basic grilled beef hot dog in a bun, but with a really special (and simple) spicy kimchi slaw and creamy sauce. The combination of crunchy slaw and the sweet, spicy, and creamy sauce really makes this hot dog something new and your friends will love it this summer....
I think it was the only dish in which whining was even remotely tolerated. “Liver and onions, OH NOOOOO!” was the hue and cry from the assembled kids. Mom and dad never really forced us to eat anything. But, if you didn’t like what was on the table, there was no alternative. And complaining really wasn’t an option; one look from dad was enough to keep any of us quiet....

Cook’s Illustrated mentions in its write-up that this is a “special occasion” cake, and indeed it is. The cake is much more involved than our usual strawberry shortcake, but perhaps more suited to a formal occasion. We just made a couple small changes to the recipe. We left out the Kirsch since we didn’t have it and didn’t think it was necessary. Rather than using a food processor to mash the berries we used a good old fashioned potato masher, which of course worked fine....
