Hamburger Cake

For my husband’s birthday one year I did a “summer grilling” theme. This was a really fun hamburger birthday cake using 9 inch pans that went along perfectly with the theme. Since then we’ve made this cake at 4th of July barbecues, birthday parties and even when the kids want to help me bake something. They love squirting red and yellow frosting to make ketchup and mustard, and I have to say, it looks pretty darn real! Try it for your next summer cookout and see how much fun it is!

How to Make the Cake look Like a Hamburger

Here are a few tips to making this cake look like a real hamburger. It’s so fun looks so real that my eyes definitely play tricks on me!

Sprinkle the top of the cake with sesame seeds. You can’t taste them and they really make the “bun” look realistic. When you frost the “burger” layer of chocolate cake, you can sprinkle a little extra cocoa powder around the sides to mix up the color and make it look more like a grilled patty.Use fondant to create lettuce, onions and cheese. See the recipe card below for instructions on how to make it look real. It’s actually very simple to do. For a quick and easy fondant, use our homemade fondant recipe. It’s also cheap – only 4 ingredients. You can even make these into mini burgers by making cupcakes in muffin tins. Follow the same process, but just cut the cupcakes in half and layer in the “burger” patty, lettuce, cheese, ketchup and mustard. So cute!
